How To Setup Imap And Smtp On Mac Mail?

IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol. It stores emails in the email server and downloads a copy of them in the end user's account. SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. It is responsible for sending emails from an email client/service. If you wish to setup IMAP and SMTP on Mac mail, follow the below-mentioned steps..

  • On your Mac computer, open the Mac mail email client and click on the File tab from the menu bar.
  • Select the Add Account option from the drop-down list.
  • Type a name in the Full Name field.
  • Enter your email address in the Email Address field.
  • Type the correct password for the email, as mentioned earlier in the Password field.
  • Click the Continue button to proceed with the next step.
  • Under Incoming Mail Server, choose IMAP in the Account Type pull-down bar.
  • Fill up the Description field if necessary.
  • Enter the correct incoming mail server name (for example, in the Incoming Mail Server field.
  • Type your email address and its password in the User Name and Password field.
  • Click the Continue button and configure and setup IMAP and SMTP on Mac mail.
  • Under Outgoing Mail Server, fill up the Description field.
  • In the Outgoing Mail Server field, type your outgoing mail server name (for example, and mark the "Use only this server" checkbox.
  • Click the Use Authentication checkbox and fill up the User Name and Password fields with your email address and its password.
  • Click the Continue button and verify your server settings under the Account Summary section.
  • Make sure to mark the Take account online checkbox and click the Create button.
  • Check whether the server settings are set to default by navigating to the Mail menu.
  • Select the Account Information tab and click the Outgoing Mail Server(SMTP) pull-down menu.
  • Choose "Edit Server List" and ensure that the outgoing mail server settings are set to default.
  • Click the Authentication drop-down menu and select "Password."
  • If you wish to use the encrypted connection, choose SSL and enter the port number 465 in the Use custom port field.
  • Click OK and go to the Advanced tab.
  • Check whether the default port number is selected.
  • Make sure to uncheck the Use SSL checkbox. 
  • Choose "Password" in the Authentication drop-down menu.
  • If you wish to use secure authentication, select the Use SSL checkbox and enter the port number 993 in the Port field.
  • After verifying the server settings, close the Accounts window and click the Save button to save the changes.
  • Verify the Mac Mail services by sending a test mail.
