Encrypting with S/MIME

Make sure that you have added a certificate to the key chain on your device. Once you got the certificate, configure the certificate in Outlook to set it up on your device.

  • Step 1:Open Outlook on your computer and select the File option from the top of the page.
  • Step 2:Select Options and choose Trust Center.
  • Step 3:Select the Trust Center settings and choose Email security from the left pane of the screen.
  • Step 4:Select the Settings option in the Encrypted email section.
  • Step 5:Now, click Choose in the Certificates and Algorithms section and select the S/MIME certificate.
  • Step 6:Click OK.
  • Step 7:Choose Options in an email message and select the Permissions option.
  • Step 8:Now, after composing the email, click Send.

If you are using an Office Insider with Microsoft 365 subscription, try the below steps:

  • Step 9:Compose an email and choose Options from the top of the page.
  • Step 10:Select Encrypt and choose Encrypt with the S/MIME option from the drop-down menu.
  • Step 11:If you have installed a S/MIME certificate on your computer, you will get to see the Encrypted with S/MIME option.

Encrypt with Microsoft 365 Messages Encryption

  • Step 1:Open any email message that you want to encrypt and choose Options from the top of the page.
  • Step 2:Select the Permission option.
  • Step 3:Choose the encryption that you like to enforce from the drop-down list.
  • Step 4:We would suggest you choose the Do Not Forward option.
  • Step 5:Now click Send.

Encrypting all outgoing messages

If you want to encrypt all the outgoing messages by default, all recipients should have a digital ID to decode the message you send.

  • Step 1:Open Outlook on your device and select the File option from the top of the page.
  • Step 2:Choose Options and select Trust Center.
  • Step 3:Select Trust center settings.
  • Step 4:Navigate to the Email Security tab in the Encrypted email section.
  • Step 5:Make sure that you select the Encrypt contents and attachments for the outgoing messages checkbox.
  • Step 6:Now compose a mail and click Send.
