How To Enable Outlook Encryption?

Microsoft Outlook has been the main pillar of several businesses for decades. It is one of the most commonly used hubs where the organizations send emails, plan meetings, and also share files. As you see the challenges mount, it is always essential to implement the best security for the platform and also all emails within Outlook. Encryption stays as the standard data protection, and it also comes in a variety of forms and services. As you notice, Microsoft offers built-in encryptions with the benefits and the downsides for each other. Carry out the steps to enable outlook encryption.

Microsoft also provides the most number of options for locking and encrypting the Outlook emails.

Microsoft Outlook usually supports two types of encryptions:

  • S/ MIME encryption
  • Microsoft 365 Message Encryption

We will now be guiding you through the steps to enable Encryption on different versions of Outlook.

  • Turn on your Windows or Mac computer.
  • Give a double-click on the Microsoft Outlook application to open it.
  • Locate and click the Message tab under the Options menu, and click the button that reads Encrypt Message Contents and Attachments.
  • If you do not find the message tab, click the Security Settings button and then click the same option as the one mentioned above.


  • Open the Outlook 2010 application on your Windows or Mac computer.
  • Click the Compose button and compose a message.
  • Click the Options tab and then select More Options. Click the dialog box launcher at the bottom of the screen.
  • Locate and click the Security Settings option and then select the option Encrypt message contents and attachments.
  • Click the Send button once you enable outlook encryption.

If you want to encrypt all the outgoing emails, follow the steps as described.

  • Click the File tab at the top-left corner of the screen and then click Options.
  • Under Options, select the option Trust Center and proceed to select Trust Center Settings.
  • In the Encrypted Email section, click the Email Security tab and click the checkbox beside the option Encrypt Contents and attachments for outgoing messages.


  • Click the File menu and select Options.
  • Proceed to select the Trust Center and then click Trust Center Settings.
  • Click the Email Security option on the left pane.
  • Choose the Settings option under the Encrypted Email section.
  • Under the Certificates and Algorithms tab, click choose and then select the encryption method S/MIME certificate. Click the OK button.
  • Compose the message you want to send and then click the Send button.

You can also encrypt with Microsoft 365 Message Encryption.

  • If you are using Microsoft Office 365, click the Options menu and click the option that reads Encrypt.
  • Select the type of permission from the item.
  • Compose a message and click the Send button.


  • Open the Email.
  • Click the Options menu and select the Permissions option.
  • Select the restrictions from the option.

Now if you wish to encrypt a single message,

  • Click the File option and then select Properties.
  • Select Security Settings and then select the option Encrypt message contents and attachments.
  • Now you can compose the message and click the Send button.
  • Successfully enable outlook encryption option.
