Hotmail IMAP and SMTP settings

The Hotmail mail service supports the IMAP and SMTP server settings. If you are using an email client to access your Hotmail account, the client should be configured with the IMAP and SMTP server settings of the Hotmail IMAP.

On Outlook 2016:

  • Open the Outlook application on your computer.
  • Click 'File' on the menu bar and select Account settings.
  • Again, click Account Settings.
  • From the email accounts list, choose the Hotmail account and click Change.
  • In the Change Account window, fill the required details.
  • Account Type: IMAP
  • Incoming mail server:
  • Outgoing mail server:
  • Click on the More Settings button at the lower right side.
  • Under the Outgoing Server tab, enable the SMTP authentication and then click OK for configuring hotmail IMAP.
  • Go to the Advanced tab, enter the information given below, and select the OK button.
  • IMAP mail server port: 993
  • Encrypted connection: SSL/TLS
  • SMTP mail server port: 587
  • Encrypted connection: STARTTLS/TLS
  • In the Account window, select Next to save the settings.
  • Close the window.

On Thunderbird

  • Launch the Thunderbird email client window and go to the Menu.
  • Select the EditTools menu and click the Account Settings option.
  • On the Account settings window, select your Hotmail account.
  • On the left panel, just below your account name, the Server Settings menu will be present, click on that.
  • Once you click the server settings menu, the server settings can be viewed on the right panel.
  • Enter the Incoming server (IMAP) details, as mentioned above.
  • Now, click Outgoing Server, which is at the bottom of the left panel.
  • Change the Outgoing Server (SMTP) settings on the right panel with the server information as given above under the Outlook client for configuring the hotmail IMAP.
