Gmail POP3 SMTP Server

If you want to access your Gmail account on an email clients such as Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird, refer to the simple instructions mentioned on this web page.The Gmail account configuration consists of two steps, namely enabling the Gmail POP3 SMTP server feature and the Gmail account setup on the preferred email client.

Step 1 - Enabling the POP3 feature in an easy way

  • Go to your computer, launch the Google Chrome web browser, and open the login web page of the Gmail account.
  • Enter the Gmail account’s email address and password in the Email Address and Password fields, respectively.
  • Once you click Sign In, you can access the Gmail POP3 SMTP Server.
  • Navigate to the Settings or gear icon, select the Settings option, and click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
  • Go to the POP Download section and select the radio button beside the ‘Enable POP for all mail’ or ‘Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on’ option.
  • Choose any one of the following options from the ‘When messages are accessed with POP’ drop-down menu.
    • Keep Gmail’s copy in the inbox
    • Mark Gmail’s copy as read
    • Archive Gmail’s copy
    • Delete Gmail’s copy

Step 2 - Configuring the Gmail account on Microsoft Outlook

  • Once you launch the Microsoft Outlook application, select FileInfoAccount SettingsAccount SettingsEmailNew.
  • The Add Account Setup dialog window will appear on the screen.
  • After selecting the Manual setup or additional server types option, click Next.
  • As soon as the Choose Service dialog window opens, select the POP or IMAP option and click the Next button.
  • Now, the POP and IMAP Account Settings dialog window will display on the screen.
  • Fill all the required fields that are listed here.
    • Your Name
    • Email Address
    • Incoming Mail Server
    • Outgoing Mail Server
    • User Name
    • Password
  • Check if the POP3 protocol is chosen from the Account Type drop-down menu.
  • If you want to save the password, checkmark the Remember option.
  • Go to the ‘Deliver new messages’ section and select the New Outlook Data File option. Click the More Settings button for additional server settings.
  • As soon as the Internet Email Settings dialog box opens, click the Outgoing Server tab and select both the ‘My outgoing server requires authentication’ and ‘Use same setting as my incoming mail server’ options to access your Gmail POP3 SMTP server.
  • Now, click the Advanced tab and fill both the Incoming Server (POP3) and Outgoing Server (SMTP) fields with valid information.
  • Click OKNextClose.

Configuring the Gmail account on the Mozilla Thunderbird

  • If you want to configure the Gmail account on the Mozilla Thunderbird email client instead of the Microsoft Outlook, carry out the following instructions.
  • First, open the Mozilla Thunderbird application’s main interface.
  • Select MenuAccount SettingsAccount SettingsAdd Mail Account.
  • The Mail Account Setup dialog box will appear on the screen.
  • After filling the following fields with the correct details, click the Continue button.
    • Your Name
    • Email Address
    • Password
  • Make sure to select the radio button beside the POP3 (keep mail on your computer) option.
  • Once you click the Done button, the Gmail account gets added to the Mozilla Thunderbird account automatically for accessing your Gmail POP3 SMTP server.
  • Navigate back to the Account Settings dialog window, select the Server Settings option on the left panel, and enter the correct information in the following fields:
    • Server Name
    • Port
    • User Name
    • Connection Security
    • Authentication Method
  • After clicking the OK button, select the Outgoing Server (SMTP) option on the left panel.
  • Provide the correct outgoing server settings in the appropriate fields.
  • The server settings required for the Gmail account are given below for your reference:
    • The domain of the Gmail account must be server settings (POP3):
      • Server name -
      • Port - 995
    • Outgoing server settings (SMTP):
      • Server name -
      • Port - either 587 or 465 (depending on the authentication type)
      • Finally you will finish the Gmail POP3 SMTP server
